fly fishing dragon fly 13.5 with jpw frame

The Dragonfly self-bailer features include a 4 inch drop stitch floor that is recessed 2 1/2 inches up inside the main tubes for better tracking and hull speed. The drop stitch floor extends into the end areas. This allows more room for cargo, fishermen, or passengers. The overall length of the boat is 13 ft 9 inches. The beam is 66 inches. The main tube diameter is 19 inches. This boat tracks extremely well because of the recessed floor. It carries a lot of gear for its size because the drop stitch floor fills the entire floor compartment well into the end sections. The Drop stitch floor can be inflated firm enough to walk on, and this is very convenient for fishermen. All of the fishing frames we have made for these boats DO NOT HAVE CASTING FLOORS. They do not need them. The drop stitch is stable enough, and is like standing on plush carpeting.

This frame is in stock at our shop, and it is break down, so we can ups it. We do not have the back seat stands, or the stand up bars. Anchor systems must be purchased and spec out and purchased seperately. So if you would like a good inexpensive row frame this would be a good place to start.

This photo shows the dragon fly with the thwarts in place. This is a great paddleboat because the thwarts can be moved to any location. I have especially enjoyed using it as an R2 paddleboat. It is fast on the water because the 6-inch thick DROP STITCH floor is recessed up inside of the boat. And actually allows the boat to track better than a non-bailer. Because of its lightweight, it accelerates quickly. This boat does not drag water inside of a bladdered evelope like our popular competitor's model does.

WATER READY 13 AND 14 FT 2 PERSON FISHING CATS

These fishing catarafts are the right boat to have, if you want to take a friend or a spouse fishing with you. Leave one frame behind and operate it solo if you like to go alone. Take both frames and there is enough room for 2 or more. Extra tube length means extra capacity. This boat is suitable for white water because of its long waterline, and wide stance. We recommend 8 ft oars. This boat is designed for river fishing. The boat in this picture is 13 ft long, but is offered in lengths up to 16 ft, with capacity for 3 fishermen if another pod is added to the frame configuration. The tubes are manufactured by Jack's Plastic Welding, and water ready manufactures the frames. Water Ready is located in the heart of the best salmon and steelhead fishing in the lower 48 states. FLY FISHING CATARAFT SYSTEM 2214 TUBES

This fly fishing cataraft system is built on customized 2214 tubes. Our 2214 tubes were originally only in the custom tube styles portion of our web site, but will now is offered as a standard product in 2005. The frame pictured here was custom designed by Ron Ferris of RiverBoat Works in Salida Co. Our customer wanted a system that he could use in low water in Colorado, The larger flows of the Sacramento River, or out in the ocean with a small outboard motor. Have a look at the back end where the motor goes. This cataraft system has nice drop bags, diamond plate deck floors, and 2 stand up positions and a huge strip net. I included this in the site because it has some very great features that are not found in run of the mill products from the larger suppliers, and this is definitely not something that you can get from China or Korea.

fly fishing cataraft

If you want to do some serious expeditionary fishing, and have a great whitewater gear boat to boot. This is a great frame set up. Note the strip baskets and swivel seats. This full frame concept puts the entire weight of the gear and passenger load along the length of the tubes. This frame is built by Down River Equipment Co. In Denver Co.

fly fishing daddy cat modular frame

This is another example of a Daddy cat rigged for fly fishing. One of the nice features about this system is the modular concept. Even the modules are modular, in that the stand up bars are removable, and so is the diamond plate. In this way, you can have a whitewater boat, a fishing boat, of just go day tripping with your row module, and it all fits on a Daddy Cat. For More information visit www.riversports.com. This can be also be configured for 4 paddlers and an oarsman for the most serious whitewater

fly fishing with a push pole

In some circumstances a pole may be the better method of locomotion. Many anglers are finding it easier to find the fish while standing, and using a pole in the shallower water. This pole is made by Cataract Shafts, and is a lightweight filament wound fiberglass shaft with two different ends. One end has a sharp rubber tip for pushing against rocks, and the other end is flat to push against a soft sediment base.

fly fishing expedition

The Cutthroat 2 is an excellent boat for expeditionary fishing trips. This narrow boat can squeeze down between the rocks when the water is low, and the fishing is good, and still take function as the trip support boat. In this photo, the boat has 80-qt cooler, fire pan, porta poty, and Paco Pads and bags. It was carrying all the kitchen supplies, beer, and food, plus 3 people's camping gear.

Often during low water in the late summer, the crowds have disappeared. Note how much gear one person can take. This was a late summer trip on the Arkansas River at 350 cfs. We did not see another trip on the river for 3 days.

Dougs souped up Grizzley fishing system

Dougs black bear Grizzley is an earlier model. He put a motor on it, and fish finder, and an umbrella. He brings us trout on occasion. At on time the shop fridge was full of trout fillets. It is wonderful to have customers who like their boats that much.

fly fishing 13.5 dragonfly with dre frame

Have a look at this fly fishing frame from Down River Equipment. This has all the bells and whistles, including a stand up bar in the back, includes anchor system, strip basket on the front, and swivel captains chair. The DragonFly has features that allow it to perform much more like a dory than any other inflatable raft. The raised inflatable drop stitch floor gives both tracking and hull speed to this boat that can not be obtained by any other craft. Drop the anchor, and the boat holds steady in the current. Take a couple of strokes and you are amazed at the acceleration, and the ease that this boat can be held in the current with just a few strokes. The fishermen can stand on the drop stitch floor without the fatigue of hard diamond plate or wood decks. The absence of these decks helps make the system more affordable, light and transportable. It can ride on the top of a car inflated. This whole system weighs in at around 175 lbs. The narrow beam allows the boat to slip down streams that are inaccessible to dories in the later part of the season when the fishing improves. Tubes carry a ten-year warranty. Visit Down River Equipment web site for more information on their frames.

fly fishing, standing in a Cutthroat2

Customers often ask me how stable the cutthroat is. I hope that this picture answers the question. Note that the boat will not turn over, but some lean bars may be a good thing if you hooked a lunker. A deck board could easily be installed on top of the tubes if a fisherman wanted to get higher.

10 FT CATS ARE NOT MADE FOR BIG WHITE WATER

In this picture you may be able to figure out what is happening. The whole story is located here inside our web site. This is a 10 ft cat 19 inches in diameter. The owner is swimming somewhere in the malestrom, while his boat cartwheels inside of this mass of swirling whitewater. The owner lived.

flyfishing from a cutthroat

Customers purchase Cutthroats for fishing because they fill these requirements. The boat is lightweight, It can carry 1 or 2 people on very shallow or narrow rivers, It will carry a lot of gear for an extended river trip, it is easy to transport or ship, and it has the capability to do serious white water. Customers can use Fat Cat frames on the cutthroat tubes if they want to achieve lightweight for packing or flying in. If the river is too narrow for oars, it can be paddled. This system increases river Access capability. For Example one of our customers uses the Cutthroat as a fishing craft inside the Washington DC beltway because the Potomac river gets very low and rocky in the summer, and he can carry the boat on top of his car.

flat deck fly fishing frame

Here is another type of cataraft that is used in Michigan for outfitter fishing trips. The style is specific to the type of fishing and the rivers in Michigan. I will let Jay Niederstadt tell you in his own words how it works.

The comparison in my mind is to a drift boat or even more so to the many fishing guides who own a drift boat and an oval inflatable to meet their different needs and different water types that they may guide on. I have always needed both types of boats for my own guiding but since I came up with this design I have sold my drift boat and raft because this boat can be used for everything. The idea of all of the flat smooth perforated metal is for easy maneuverability when walking around in the boat, like when the rower and fisherman want to trade positions. Also it is nice to have a flat deck to sit gear bags and such on without having to strap every thing to the frame. Another reason is for less chances for fly line to catch on frame work and such. Many boats seem to catch fly line constantly so when an angler tries to shoot line their line becomes caught on something and their cast falls short of the target. This can make a big difference in a day when we are on a steady drift and you only get one cast at each target. This is the same reason for the casting braces having line guards that connect the vertical portion of the brace to the horizontal portion of the brace. The reason for the deck being perforated is so that mud and water will simply drain through keeping every thing clean and dry. I designed the frame to sit on top of the toons to get the anglers higher of off the water. This enables them to cast farther, mend line easier and to see into the water better. If we are in a more stealthy situation with spooky fish the casting braces can be lowered and the anglers can fish sitting down and still be able to swing their rod over the top of the braces. The boats are also equipped with a permanent motor mount. I use a 5h.p. motor to motor out of along float at the end of the day or back up river to the take out in some cases. We use these boats on big and small water alike. Some of the river can be as narrow as 30' and some are 200' wide or more.

DRAGONFLY CARRIES 3 ON FISHING TRIP

We needed some photographs of the Dragonfly in action as a fly fishing boat. We had this great Down River Equipment frame and I needed to visit some dealers in Montana so I headed up there on October 15 2004. We did not kill them, but we didn’t get skunked either. This system has a great anchor system, and even with 3 people and gear it is extremely light and fast on the water. The drop stitch inflatable floor is recessed inside of the main tubes 2.5 inches. The combination of that recessed floor, the tapered tubes, and the low angle of kick, gives this boat a fast hull speed. See the boat specification chart if you are interested in this or our other new 15.5 ft design with 22 inch tubes.

FLY FISHING KICK RAFT

Here is what Darryl Osburn said about our new mosquito 13 lb kick raft. They tried it out on the Bitterrood River in Montana. Darryl was our first inflatable customer, and was the first person in the USA to sell pontoon fishing boats (Water Otter), so he knows his stuff. He has been doing it since the early 1980's... Jack

Jack,
Test drove the Mosquito on the Bitterroot River and was impressed with the
ease it kicked and turned with flippers, also how little water it took to
float it. It's not for everyone because my experience is that not many
people are that proficient with flippers on moving water, but for those that
are this is it!

For Fly fishermen both fill valves need to be in the back of craft to
eliminate line tangle. Some kind of cushion or seat ( Crazy Creek Chair )
would be nice. Possibly mount the back inflatable cushion under seat for a
second chamber for those that are concerned about that.

Still testing, if you need this boat back right away let me know.

Thanks,
Darryl
