Loading Bags for Another Day in the Indian Hymalayas Great Picture with huge mountains in the background. I understand that the boat is at an elevation of 17,000 ft. COURTESY JOHN FULLBRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY 1 800 973 6046 Loading Pack Animals in the Hymilayas This is a picture of some of the expedition members loading pack animals for a portage of some class 6 whitewater in the Indian Himalayas. COURTESY JOHN FULLBRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY Our Stow bags are used for everything from personal gear to tents and tripods. Smaller versions are great for stuffing inside of Kayaks, and larger ones work well for first aid or cold weather gear storage. Tent stow bags allow you to pack your wet tent into a bag so it can be dried out later in the day. Small Kayak Stow 600 cubic inches, Large Kayak Stow 850 cubic inches, Canoe Stow 1700 cubic inches, tent stow 2500 cubic inches. These volumes are the maximum roll down volume of each bag. Compare Large Gear Stow to Guitar Bag The Large Gear Stow Bag is also used as a Guitar bag by some. In fact Cascade Outfitters Calls this Bag their small Guitar bag. The Different sizes and closure styles are shown on the Picture. Basically all Stow Bags have a closure that connects over the top of the bag. Guitar and outfitter bags have closures that fasten along the side of the bag. Obviously there are more D rings and a larger cost to the Guitar Bag, but it has more locations for attaching the bag to the gear load. The Large Gear Stow bag is 4 cubic feet maximum volume, is 15.25 inches in diameter and 45 inches tall when fully rolled. The Guitar bag is 6 cubic feet maximum volume, 19 inches in diameter, and 51 inched tall when fully rolled. Anchor bags are a simple device to anchor a boat in the river. It is made of heavy duty PVC coated mesh with 4 grommets at the top, and boat fabric bottom. Put rocks in it and let it sink. 10 inches in Diameter and 10 inches high. Getting an Effective Air Tight Seal Follow this link for in depth instructions on how to get the bag closure tight. DESIGN PROCEEDURE FOR A CUSTOM SIZED DRY BAG The dimensions in this drawing represent the cargo inside of the bag. You can see that there is 1 inch clearance on each side for ease of the item removal. The handle is located in the center of the cargo for the best balance, but we can always move it or the d rings to different locations The Outfitter Stow bag has come into existence because our outfitter customers wanted a round bottom bag that was the size of a stow bag. Some customers use it for personal item storage (toothpaste, cigarettes, sun screen, sunglasses etc). In this way it replaces the ammo can system, which served us all well, but which tends to get in the way for most boatmen. Ammo Cans are hard, and can end up hurting people. For this reason them need to be stored in a place where they do not bang around and hit people. A Stow bag on the other hand can be in the people zone and right there where the customer/ raft passenger needs it. Note that the bag has a grommet on the bottom. This is so the bag can be tied at the bottom. This leaves the closure free. If hung upside down in this manner, water tends to run away from the seal. When water can not collect in the seal, there is less that runs into the bag when it is opened repeatedly during the day. Our Family uses this bag for each of our personal clothing on a summer desert river trip. We do not take many clothes, and so they are a perfect way to help minimize the amount of gear being taken. Each person gets his or her own bag of clothes, and even a 4-year-old can handle his own gear. DROP BAG FOR THE BACK OF AN AVON RAFT This waterproof bag fits the entire back of an Avon 16 ft raft. It has a waterproof roll down closure. This system fits in a self bailer, and allows the storage of all kinds of gear without having to use a dangerous cargo net. Have a look at this bag in action on the Grand Canyon. DROP BAG REPLACES DRY BOX ON FLY OUT ALASKA TAT TRIPS One of our customers uses this bag instead of a dry box in Alaska on the Tatshenshini river. They can drive their gear into the put in, but they fly their gear out. So it does not make sense to have a dry box that takes up a lot of space in an airplane. This picture has the flexible lid unbuckled and up so one can see the roll down closure. OUTFITTER BAGS HAVE OPTIONAL BACK PACK STRAPS We have been installing removable back pack straps on our outfitter dry bags for some years now. They are adjustable and removable, because we do not think in serious whitewater that back pack straps can present a foot entrapment hazard. Please tie your bags down with the back pack straps under the bag to minimize this problem if you do not remove them. Have a look an how it fits on a boaters back. ROUND BOTTOM OUTFITTER BAGS PRODUCT PHOTO Our outfitter dry bags are the industry standard, with bags in use that have stood the test of time and outfitter use. Hatch River Expeditions still uses some of our dry bags we sold them for their Grand Canyon operation over 23 years ago (as of 2006). They are constructed with 35 oz PVC coated material on the bottom. All welded D ring patches that include stainless steel d rings, and our unique closure system that really works. Follow this link to learn more about our dry bags how good they are and who uses them Saddle bags are a brand new concept. They are custom built to your specifications. They can have a zipper in the top, or they can have a roll down closure like this one has. These are made of tuff 32 oz boat fabric to withstand the pounding a horse can give a bag up in the trees. |
